Why We Pray Corporately.
God is calling his people to prayer. Corporate prayer is a different experience to praying alone.
Corporate Prayer is Effective.
- The early church was devoted to corporate prayer.
They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. - Acts 2:42.
- Following corporate prayer, the early church experienced a supernatural move of His presence
(shaking) followed by a bold declaration of the Word of God.
And when they had prayed, the place where they had gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak the word of God with boldness. - Acts 4:31.
- When seeing the needs of the harvest, Jesus said, “pray” or “ask” that the Lord of the harvest send out workers. Prayer came first.
- Prayer helps us get focused on His priorities, allowing Him to do the adding.
"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” - Matthew 6:33.
- James states that some things are not received because they were not asked for.
You do not have because you do not ask. - James 4:2b.
- Jesus says the church is to bind and loose the kingdom of heaven on earth. It would seem this
binding and loosing begins in prayer.
"I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” - Matthew 16:19.
- Jesus said my house is to be a house of prayer (that's corporate, together).
You will encounter resistance.
- In the garden, Jesus calls Peter, James and John to pray and watch. They instead are overcome with sleep. Jesus states: “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak". We've heard that quoted for many things, but the context is corporate prayer!
- Our battle is not against flesh and blood. The enemy knows the power of prayer and
discourages it.
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. - Ephesians 6:12.
We can teach you how to pray.
- We like the TEAM method. TEAM prayer is a particular style of corporate prayer that many of us have found both helpful and enjoyable when gathering together to pray. We know there are other methods for corporate prayer, this is just one we have found that works well.
- We believe that effective corporate prayer requires unity, and have found that this comes from relationship, which is why we encourage our members to pray with the same group for thirty minutes on a weekly basis.
-
In our experience many Christians rarely pray corporately. We believe there are three major reasons
for this:
- They don't understand the importance and effectiveness of corporate prayer.
- Both the enemy and the flesh try to discourage it.
- They've never been taught or really learned how to pray corporately.
